This article gives a brief outline of a recent finding that species seem to evolve faster in the colder climates than the tropics - contrary to popular belief. By evolving faster, they mean that new species appear faster, and the extinction rate of species is also higher. This suggests, but does not directly prove, why there are more species in the warmer regions than the colder areas.
